Everything you need to know about Roof Styles

Basic Roof Styles

There are four primary types of roofs. Flat roofs are the most common, that's self-explanatory. They are not perfectly flat and wouldn't allow for runoff. They are cheaper to install and keep up by Pittsburgh contractors and more user-friendly.

Skillion Roof

When a single roof plane or flat roof is placed on a building at an angle and has one wall higher than the other the roof is no longer flat, and it's known as a skilled roof.

Gabled Roof

The roof, like an upside-down V in which it doesn't touch the wall's end is a gabled roof or Gable roof. Gable is the upside-down V at the bottom. A simple gable roof has one central ridge.

Hipped Roof

Hipped roofs or hip roofs are roofs that connect all walls horizontally. The typical hipped roofing is built with an underlying ridge, however instead of being vertically angled, like the gable's triangle it features two ridges, called hips.

Cross Gabled, and Hipped Cross Hipped

Many houses aren't simply rectangles and squares. A house that is L-shaped or T-shaped might have two gabled roofings which meet at an internal angle. This is a cross gabled roof.

Similar to hipped roofs. Cross-hipped roofs can be used to cover the L or T shapes.

Mix and match

Roofs typically combine of these basic styles . you might have a gabled or gable roof at an angle of right angles to an hip roof. Dutch gable is a combination of Hipped and gable roofs for aesthetic reasons.

Other Styles

There are various styles that are variations on these basic shapes. An A-frame is, for instance, an exaggerated sort of gable. The standard barn roof known as a "gambrel" roof is another gable variation with gentle sloped tops transitioning to an upward slope. A mansard roofing style has similar gradual and steep slopes but is hipped rather than gabled.

These styles can have practical applications. Gambrel roofing offers more space and shed snow better than roofs with an incline that is steeper.

Gabled roofs are generally more affordable than hipped roofing, however Hipped roofs are more resistant to the force of high winds. It all comes down to your personal preference. Siding Pittsburgh, contractors also stated that all roofing styles successfully keep the rain away and won't disappear if they're securely secured. It's the look of the roof that's important.
